Thousands of people met with TEKEL workers in Ankara

Today, there was a demonstration in Ankara to support the workers of TEKEL. Unions, Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş), Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DİSK), Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions (KESK) and KAMU-SEN, had a co-decision and arranged this demonstration. Members of these unions from all over Turkey came to Ankara to support the struggle of TEKEL workers. Mustafa Türkel, the chairman of Tek Gıda-İş, said that “We are no longer in defense but we are now struggling to have new rights!” Workers of unions will spend the night together with the workers of TEKEL.

The streets of demonstration field were full of workers from all over Turkey. Mustafa Türkel reminded that they are all here due to the co-decision of the unions and attracted attention to the fact that supporter tents were set up all over the country. He also addressed to the government by saying that “Are you all blind, are you all deaf?”
He continued: “Along with seven years they did all the cruelty to the working class. Every way was tried to not to unionize workers. We did not let it happen and we won’t. We are not in defense any more; we will fight for new rights!” He also declared that in 22 of February the chairmen of confederations will gather together to discuss the new steps of this struggle.

The chairman of KESK, Emirali Şimşek and the chairman of DİSK, Süleyman Çelebi also made small speeches and said that they will be in solidarity with the workers of TEKEL until the end.

Workers demanded general strike - 21.02.2010

In the 68th day of the TEKEL workers resistance, supporters from all over the Turkey met in Ankara and today they were wished a safe journey by mass public statement. The chairmen of the confederations that arranged this meeting made speeches. The chairman of Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions (KESK), Sami Evren, indicated that no one would give in the slavery imposition of the government anymore and emphasized they would always be on the TEKEL workers’ side. The chairman of Kamu-Sen, Bircan Akyıldız also said that they would always support TEKEL workers in this struggle.

The chairman of Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DİSK), Süleyman Çelebi, addressed to the government: “This struggle is a good lesson for the government. The ones who claimed that this demonstration is the devil’s job should be ashamed of this solidarity of the workers. They want to impose slavery but they should know that we will continue our struggle against this slavery system!”

The speech of Mustafa Kumlu, chairman of Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions, was constantly interrupted by the protests of workers. During his speech, workers shouted slogans and demanded general strike. On the other hand, Kumlu referred to the government and called them to see the unity and solidarity of the workers. “Workers no longer want to work without insurance as slaves. This resistance has a positive effect on working class therefore it is negative for the government.”
Workers reacted to the Kumlu’s speech by saying that “No more words, it is time for general strike!”
